Hello all!
Allow me to introduce myself to some of you who may not know me - my name is Jeff Armendariz and I am the Community Outreach Chair and a Past President of the Santa Clarita Valley Bar Association. For the last ten years, the Bar Association has sponsored an annual Speech Competition for junior and senior class students of the William S. Hart School District. We have completed the details for this year's upcoming competition that I would like to share with you.
This single-evening event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 6 p.m. in the West Ranch High School auditorium. As mentioned, the competition is open to any junior and senior class student, who will be instructed to complete an application and submit a draft essay to affirm their intent to participate. The oral competition will be limited to a maximum of fifteen students, District-wide. If more than fifteen students apply for the competition, the Board of Trustees for the Bar Association will select the students who will participate, based on the student' submitted draft essays.
A special aspect of the competition involves the scoring panel - composed of Los Angeles County Superior Court judges. The six judges who volunteer their time for this event often happen to be SCV residents (many of whom have had/or we will have their kids attend our high schools!). The top three students in the competition will be awarded cash scholarships and will also be personally recognized, as our guest, at a formal Bar Association dinner event to be held May 9, 2024 at the Oaks Club & Grille (Valencia).
