It’s the oldest “chicken or egg” argument in American popular music:
Was Broadway inspired by jazz, or was jazz inspired by Broadway? Ask a musicologist, and you will probably hear about Summertime from Porgy and Bess, George Gershwin’s immortal melding of American blues and grand opera. But talk to any Miles Davis fan, and they’ll tell you about My Funny Valentine, the timeless tune from Lorenz and Hart’s forgettable 1937 musical Babes in Arms.
Who’s right? Who cares! Enjoy the arguments of both sides as local musical heroes the GO Jazz Big Band play the tunes that made the musicals—or the musicals that made the tunes—or—oh whatever…the music is going to be great!
Sunday November 24th at 3 pm at the West Ranch High School Theater, director Brian Leff invites vocalists Steve Lively and Kaitlin Holt to try their luck against the massive sound of the band. With classic songs like I Got Rhythm, I've Got You Under My Skin, Too Darn Hot, Send in the Clowns, All the Things You Are, and Easy to Love, the only guaranteed winners are the audience.
General admission is $10, seniors are $5, and students attend free. Check out the band’s website, GOJazzBigBand.com for more information.
